Itinerary

1

Day 1: Fez / Ifran / Medilt / Merzouga

Departing early from Fez, you will begin your journey at 8:00. We will pass by Ifrane.

This will be a change from what is typically seen in Morocco. We will visit the cedars forest in Azrou, where you will see the monkeys and get the chance to feed then and drive across the Middle Atlas Mountains. Most of the day will be spent winding your way through the beautiful forests, springs, jagged rock faces, and Berber villages, as you cross the Atlas Mountains and begin to descend towards the Sahara Desert. Halfway through, you will stop for lunch in the town of Midelt – famous for its fossils and rocks. At that point, we continue toward Merzouga, where we will stop for panoramic views of a huge oasis of the palm trees. We will reach Merzouga in the afternoon, and eat dinner with Saharan music, staying overnight in a traditional Kasbah.

Day 2: Merzouga / Erg Chebbi

After breakfast, we will make out way to the desert for a half a day to see the different faces of desert dunes. While exploring its black volcanic rocks and passing through small villages, we will stop to listen to some Saharan Music in El Khamlia, and visit a lake and oasis Merzouga. You will then have a short visit to Rissani – the first capital of dynasty Alouite, which includes some historical Kasbahs and the famous market, where you will have the opportunity to test the local food of the area in the Pizza Berber. We will then take the 4×4 towards the Desert. After a rest and a mint tea, the guide and camels will be waiting to carry you across the sandy dunes of the Erg-Chebbi, where you will enjoy the beauty of the sunset on a camel. After 1 hour, you will reach to the desert camp to spend the night in a Berber tent, where your camels are hobbled, and mint tea is served. After a wonderful dinner under the Stars, and you will then stay overnight in the Berber Tent.

Day 3: Merzouga / Gorge Todra or Ouarzazate

We will get up early to watch the sunrise, which is just behind the Algerian border – about 50 km from Merzouga. We will then take the camels back to the hotel, for you to take a shower. You will next depart for Ouarzazate, while traveling the rugged Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, that rise up like turreted sand castles along this ancient caravan trading route. This area has long been a popular location for Hollywood films such as The Last Temptation of Christ, Jewel of the Nile, and most recently – Hideous Kinky. The central region is one of the most exciting and romantic destinations of Morocco, nestled along rich river valleys, palmeries, and burnished mud-brick homes, ablaze in vibrant color under the shelter of the blue desert sky. We stop for lunch and walk in Todra Gorge, while traveling through the Dades Valley, past dramatic escarpments. We reach Ouarzazate in the afternoon, for dinner and an overnight stay.

4

Day 4: Ouarzazate / Ait ben Haddou / Marrakech

After breakfast, we will visit the town of Ouarzazate, which includes the Kasbah of Taourirt and the Atlas Studios movie studios, which is the largest and most famous of all Africa. From here, we head to the Fint Oasis, near Ouarzazate. We will stop in Ait Ben Haddou, where we will arrive in time of lunch. Here we can visit the famous Kasbah – declared UNESCO World Heritage, which was the scene of films like Gladiator, Babel, and Lawrence of Arabia. We continue passing through the High Atlas and the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, which climbs from the plains up to 2260m above sea level. We will pass through small villages, small waterfalls, and mountains – a continuously changing landscape of colours. We reach Marrakech in the afternoon for the end of the trip.
